In the 19th century the hotel was a veritable “little England” in the heart of
Rome. Following the example of the great triumvirate of romantic poets - Byron,
Keats and Shelley - artists and writers met there when they came to the capital,
and were at the origins of the hotel’s fame. This attracted other Italian and
foreign artists, including Ungaretti, Calvino, Liszt and Mark Twain. Hemingway
was a regular at the hotel when he came to Rome, together with Hollywood stars
who were filming at Cinecittà: Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor and Gregory Peck
all appreciated the excellent hospitality offered by the hotel. |
